dolly the sheep has been
put to death!
after surviving both a series of early and possibly dna-related life cycle illnesses
and the foot and mouth genocide, which a couple of years ago carved its way through the countryside only miles from her grazing grounds, the cloned mammal queen, icon of the brave new age of the genome, has finally succumbed to a progressive lung disease.
one of my favourite victims of modern science. born a freak but not hydrocephalic, not with her blood vessels on the outside, not with monstrous and previously unknown genetic diseases. unlike too many other children of the genome. yet still marked by an invisible difference, of which she was blissfully unaware as it quite possibly ticked away in her cells. a visible symbol of succesful cloned life. "it doesn't work you say? look at Dolly!".
now that dolly is dead. what symbols to take her place? does this mark the end of the daydream of human cloning? we shall see. I suspect there are a fair number of deformed babies still to come, human, inhuman, nonhuman.

on the radio just now, an interview with a group of students at some hillbilly university somewhere in the uk. horrifying. a cacophony of broad, angry, opinionated essex accents vomiting out the government agenda. ideal citizens.
'we must go in and liberate iraq' [liberate? anschluss...].
'innocent iraqi people are dying every day under saddam' [under dubiously legal UN sanctions one might add...].
'politicans are human beings [dubious], they know what they're doing [even more dubious], they know what is best [yeah fucking right dubious: and then the punchline...] I study history [!!!]'
then, an ingenue voiced objections to rampant militarism. 'booooooo'...
I surrender my hopes. the 60s are clearly over. a dark new and fervently unskeptical generation looms on the horizon.

to pacify my pixie sidekick I took her to the cinema last night.
final destination 2 - occasionally amusing but essentially vapid and predictable teenybopper schlock- sequel: death stalks the earth killing the miraculous survivors of a traffic pileup accident. blah blah blah. ignore the frankly flawed metaphysics, draw your meager enjoyment from the insanely exagerated gore factor and the occasional suggestions of inventiveness.
the film gained considerably in deconstruction. consider the performative nature of prediction in oedipus rex and in the hookman in the elevator decapitation sequence.
possibly, only worth seeing for all the possible storylines it suggests - impossible storylines, of course, to an industry that aims its vacuous missiles straight into the heart of the lowest common denominator. you can't make intelligent films for an 85 IQ audience.
