handed in my dissertation. today. one day early. external examiner going to siberia early next week, good to give him more than one day to mark the beast.
32 000 words over 90 pages. 20 000 word limit, so 12 000 of them in the footnotes. excruciating. longest thing I have ever written.
mentally exhausted now. large part of my psychic structure has been torn away, perceived wound needs time to heal. have been doing nothing, but nothing else for the last three months, even less for the last six weeks. a long blank vertiginous stretch of gap-ness in my consciousness, reaching back to the end of march. it became summer while I wasn't looking.
time to chill the funk out now. watch tv and read sci-fi novels. travel for a while. play computer games. lie on the beach. rest my feverish brain.
having said that... my summer reading is heidegger, being and time, and merleau-ponty phenomenology of perception. heavy books. but transportable - I can work on a train without needing to take a whole damn library with me. relief. or on the beach.
anyway. a few things to sort out now that I'm in the material world again. like run a wash, eat, shave, sleep. find out what people have been doing while I was 'away'... help other people edit their dissertations...

Whee! Well done, and w00t! for footnotes. Just think, you'll be doing it all again (but scarier) in a couple of years' time... I think you should go punting to relax, because my mind can't contain the image.

I heard you made your poor brother read through the whole theses and then handed it in before he could make his critisism known to you. Poor bastard. But congrats and all that! I bet you've been in the well-known post-work vacuum ;) Hope to see you sometime this summer!
